Castello di Bolgheri Bolgheri Superiore 2015

The famous Bolgheri castle at the estate has origins dating back near 1200. It’s an incredibly rich historical place that now is home to over 130 hectares, 50 of which are covered by vineyards with the rest made up of some 6,000 olive plants, sown grounds and woods.

It’s hard to argue that any winery is better situated in Tuscany. Tucked between the two most famous wineries in Italy of Ornellaia and Sassacaia, the grapes grown here are mainly Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot from the best DOC vineyards surrounding the castle. The Bolgheri castle, still owned by the same family, is situated between the world-famous Ornellaia and Sassicaia (The 2015 Sassicaia was Wine Spectator’s #1 wine of the year in 2018) wineries.

Their wines are every bit as classy as their two neighbors, just released without much of the fanfare and most of the big bucks that surround those wines. As you can tell by it’s big scores each year, including this, the 96-point 2015 vintage, it’s clear these wines deserve Italian collector’s full attention.

96 Points, Wine Spectator
Very tightly wound, with a dense bed of tannins providing support for the black currant, black cherry, wild herb, mineral and earth flavors. Ripe yet lively, showing fine intensity on the fruit-, mineral- and tar-filled aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2040.

96 Points, Wine Spectator

Can I say for certain this baby is going to wind up on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list this year? Not for certain, I suppose but it definitely follows their formula. This is a lights out new Super Tuscan release from a back vintage that Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate praised for showing the, “exuberance, softness and richness of the vintage”.  I’m not at all surprised to see Wine Spectator shower it with a big 96-point score, it is an elite 2015 bottling. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot — this is a knockout SuperTuscan, that you’ll want to snag a few of the 42 bottles total I have.
