Isle Saint-Pierre Rose IGP Mediterranee 2022

Categories ,

Isle Saint Pierre is a small island in the Rhône River, located 25km south of Arles and 15km away from the Mediterranean in the heart of the Camargue region. In 1927, Parisian wine merchant Pierre Chassaing founded Domaine Isle Saint-Pierre and devoted himself to cultivating vines and raising sheep.

A few rows of vines still remain from that time, together with a flock of 200 sheep that provides the manure needed to nourish the vines. The proximity to the water means that the island enjoys a coastal climate (with a cooling influence from the nearby bodies of water) and deep, well-draining sedimentary soils comprised of sand and silt.

Because of the terroir and temperature, they are able to grow varietals that thrive in Continental climates. For red wines as well as for the rosé, the main varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenere, and Arinarnoa (a hybrid of Merlot and Petit Verdot). The white wines are made from Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Colombard, Muscat and Gewurtztraminer.

4th generation winemaker Julien Henry sustainably farms this incredible hidden gem, making some of the most lively, quaffable wines anywhere and doing it from a tiny little island that you would have to know about to find!

An outrageously good wine for the price, this is an intricate and racy blend of 30% Cab Franc, 30% Merlot, 15% Vermentino, 5% Colombard, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Arinarnoa, 5% Carmenere, 3% Tannat and 2% Syrah. All this to say, that this is a Rose blend made with a lot of thought and a formula that has been tinkered dozens of times over the years. It’s as crisp and and vibrant as you’d want – with tropical and stone fruit flavors up front, a dash of wild strawberry, some floral elements and juicy nectarine. It’s steely, and minerally with great acid. This is a food friendly treat or a pink wine that could shine on its own.
