Avignonesi Da-Di Sangiovese 2021

If you’re wondering how Avignonesi continues to pull rabbits out of its hat, bringing us a new and ridiculously good wine once or twice a year, good news—there’s more where that came from. I’ll tell you why.

Last summer, when superstar winemaker Matteo Giustiniani came to New Jersey, we sat down for lunch and I had the opportunity to taste through his wines. Their Grifi is, pound for pound, one of the very best Super Tuscans we’ve ever offered. But their portfolio goes far beyond just that one great wine.

As I learned last year, they literally make dozens of fantastic wines. It’s one of Tuscany’s most versatile wineries without a doubt. So that day, over fresh pizza slices and summer salads, we sharpened our pens and worked out a few great deals that we’re going to continue to slowly roll out.

Their 2021 Da-Di is 100% Sangiovese aged in clay pots (Amphora) that brilliantly showcases the winemaking prowess of Matteo Giustiniani in a way beyond anything we’ve previously seen. It’s pure class.

92 Points, Vinous

A lovely bouquet of lavender, violets and crushed blackberries rises from the 2021 Sangiovese Da-Di. This washes across the palate with an intense wave of fleshy ripe fruits, all balanced by a salty flourish of minerality and tantalizing acidity. The 2021 finishes with grippy concentration yet remains fresh, with blue- and purple-toned inner florals that linger. The Da-di is a varietal Sangiovese that’s refined in amphora, where about one-third of the grapes are left in whole clusters through fermentation. This is an incredibly fun wine to taste.

It’s pure class. The wine is fleshy and rich and so wildly aromatic, with crushed red and black preserves that dominate with some more floral notes and a hint of cinnamon. On the attack, it’s a burst of fruit that still manages to be restrained while bursting with youthful energy.
