93 Points, Wine Spectator
Bright cherry, kirsch, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this rich, vibrant and harmonious Dolcetto, which has plenty of structure, building to a long, complex aftertaste of fruit and mineral. Drink now through 2028.
Pecchenino San Luigi Dogliani 2021
This is a beautiful example of one of my absolute favorite grapes, Dolcetto – a Piedmontese grape that has so much rich history, yet continues to be phased out as the world clamors for more Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. It comes from Pecchenino, a winery that has been a beacon of winemaking excellence and tradition in Piedmont for over four generations. Their family winery is perfectly nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of Dogliani – and their commitment to Dolcetto has never wavered, even as others around them chased the money.

Dolcetto made in the right hands is one of the most delightful Italian reds. In the hands of the Pecchenino family, this Dolcetto speaks volumes.
Founded at the turn of the 19th century, the Pecchenino estate is located in the heart of Dogliani, committed to crafting two styles of Dolcetto. Their San Luigi, sourced from vineyards just to the south of the famed Barolo zone, was recently upgraded to DOCG status. You better believe they played a pivotal role in making that happen.
The family continues to push the boundaries to redefine what’s possible in the world of Italian wine – even as outside influences loom. With each vintage, they continue to impress critics and wine lovers alike, solidifying their place as one of the premier wineries in Dogliani and beyond. Their 2021 San Luigi bottling with a thunderous 93-point review from Wine Spectator is no exception to that. This is a fruity and fun wine but with layers of sophistication; this is not your average Dolcetto.
