“I loved the 2023 Gigondas, a ripe, sweetly fruited, sexy, yet elegant Gigondas. Red and black fruit with a peppery garrigue, sandalwood, and Provencal spice notes that all shine here, and it’s medium to full-bodied, balanced, and has a great finish.”
La Bastide Saint Dominique is a boutique winery in the south of Rhone Valley known for producing some absolutely exceptional values. Today’s Gigondas should give you a perfect idea of the kinds of magic that this small producer is capable of.
Their Gigondas is a home-run value, which the winery attributes to their special terroir in Gigondas with southern-facing hillsides that are full of stony, clay soil.
They make their Gigondas as a typical GSM – but with their magical Grenache fruit representing the lions’ share of the blend. The 2023 vintage is 80% grenache, 10% mourvedre and 10% syrah, and is a beautiful, big jammy wine that shines with blackberries, strawberries and red licorice that give way to some black olives and baking spice. It’s a dense and silky wine with expert structure, suggested that while the wine is fabulous already in its youth it will only become more approachable and intricate over the next 10-15 years.
