Barons de Rothschild Lafite et Nicolas Catana CARO 2017

Bodegas Caro is the winery responsible for Aruma. It is run by both Chateau Lafitte Rothschild and Nicolas Catena – quite the famous wine duo. We’ve recently doled out our annual allotment of Aruma, but I have something even more special to offer today.

‘Caro’ is the signature Bordeaux blend that the two famous wine families make. It is arguably the most ‘Bordeaux’ of any Argentinian wine, no doubt a product of all the Lafite Rothschild hands that have their say in its creation.

The Cabernet/Malbec blend that I tried last week is simply stunning from the 2017 vintage, and unsurprisingly carries a very big score, a 97-pointer from James Suckling who calls it “one of the most direct and clear Caros in a long time.”

Original price was: $85.00.Current price is: $69.00.

97 Points, James Suckling
This is one of the most direct and clear Caros in a long time with blue-fruit, violet and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Crushed-stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and contracted with a level of shyness to its strength. The length derives from the excellence of the cabernet. One for the cellar. Blend of 74% malbec and 26% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2023, but exciting to drink all the same.

97 Points, James Suckling

This is the flagship bottling of the partnership between Catena and Chateau Lafite Rothschild and their most ‘Bordeaux like’ in their impressive fleet of wines, no doubt a product of all the Lafite Rothschild hands that have their say in its composition. The Cabernet/Malbec blend that I tried last week is simply stunning from the 2017 vintage, and unsurprisingly carries a very big score, a 97-pointer from James Suckling who calls it “one of the most direct and clear Caros in a long time.
