Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec 2023

93 Points, Vinous – 93 Points, John Gillman (A View From the Cellar)

Delicate and linear on the palate, this is a pure, fresh, dry, and finely textured, refined Chenin Blanc with persistent purity, finesse, and salty-mineral tension. It’s a treat already, even though it’s just a baby. This is a chalky picture book Haut-Lieu that can age for many years (John Gillman suggested it will drink until 2085!), even though it is already a knockout! There early returns on the 2023 are spectacular – this is one of the finest, most delicate and elegant bottling I can remember, at least at this early stage. A terrific and buoyant Vouvray that any Chenin lover should try—or, better yet, cellar!

93 Pts,John Gillman – A View From the Cellar
“The 2023 Vouvray “Le Haut Lieu” Sec from Domaine Huët is a classic in the making, coming in at an even thirteen percent octane in this vintage and offering up a bright and complex bouquet of quince, lemon, chalky soil tones, lanolin, white lilies and a topnote of citrus peel. On the palate the wine is pure, precise and full-bodied, with a lovely core of fruit, a fine spine of acidity, lovely focus and grip and a long, well balanced and complex finish. As is so often the case with the Sec bottlings from Domaine Huët, the 2023 Le Haut Lieu is quite open out of the blocks and is a delicious glass of wine at the present time. If history is any guide, a few years down the road it will close up for a period of hibernation before it re-emerges to drink well for another fifty years. Fine juice. 2024-2085.”

“The 2023 Vouvray Sec Le Haut-Lieu is a pure, refined, seamless style with pear, pineapple and nectarine flavors. It boasts excellent clarity and refinement, with lovely freshness hailing from calibrated acidity that bursts through this blossoming wine. Considering this was only bottled three weeks before tasting, I’m very encouraged by the results.”

Huet’s wines are a singular achievement – full-bodied yet crystalline, powerful yet elegantly refined. Sotheby’s calls them “the benchmark for Chenin Blanc’s potential,” while Vinous praises their “ethereal and elegant quality that defies scientific analysis.” These wines are collector-worthy, carefully layered, and truly outstanding. There’s nothing else like them.

The original Huet vineyard from the early 1900s is Le Haut-Lieu—. It’s not particularly big at nearly 9 hA, but it is such an incredibly overpowering site. It has the richest soils of the domaine’s three crus—a deep limestone-clay—and the wines are generally the estate’s most approachable. In some vintages, small quantities from nearby estate parcels may be added to Le Haut-Lieu. In 2023, it’s as pristine and pure fruited as ever, a complete delight that should age gracefully for decades to come.
