Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2021

“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is one of the most polished young wines I have ever tasted from Dunn. Blackberry, graphite, crushed rocks, lavender, espresso, licorice and spice saturate the palate. There’s plenty of Howell Mountain tannin and acid, but in 2021, those elements are totally woven into the wine’s heady, luxurious fabric. Even so, I would not plan on opening a bottle any time soon. The 2021 spent 31 months in 100% new French oak, pretty much the norm here. What a wine!” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The colour of the Howell Mountain Cabernet is noticeably darker than the Napa Valley bottling, showcasing an incredibly intense, mineral-driven profile. The tannins have an ironstone-like quality— firm, structured, and reminiscent of that ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’ metaphor. The palate has remarkable density, balanced by a pure, vibrant mix of tart red berries and black cherries. The tannins become more assertive, but as they gradually soften, a rush of juicy blood orange acidity emerges. The wine carries intriguing layers of sagebrush, cedarwood, and warm brown spices, delivering ample power and complexity.

Dunn Vineyards, located high on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, is an iconic producer renowned for its powerful and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded by Randy Dunn in 1979, the estate quickly established a reputation for a distinct, mountain-fruit driven style.

Randy’s philosophy centers on minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the intensity and structure inherent in Howell Mountain fruit to fully express themselves. Their wines are characterized by concentrated dark fruit flavors, firm tannins, and a pronounced minerality, requiring significant time in the bottle to fully integrate and reveal their complexity.

The estate farms its hillside vineyards meticulously, embracing sustainable practices. Dunn Vineyards produces two primary Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings: the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which incorporates fruit from their estate and select other mountain vineyards, and the Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, a flagship wine sourced entirely from their estate. Both wines are celebrated for their longevity and classic Napa Valley structure, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate wines built for the long haul. Dunn Vineyards remains a benchmark for mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, embodying a steadfast commitment to quality and a distinctive, age-worthy style.
