I rarely bring in a Barbera Superiore, but this absolutely deserves your attention. I don’t remember the category being as bright and energetic as this bottling was. It stole the show a few days ago at lunch, with beautiful cherry notes that dominate with effortly silkiness and waves of purity. Parker’s Wine Advocate went nuts giving it a 94 for a wine they called a “well-made Superiore with both intensity and balance.”This should be on every wine lover’s Thanksgiving table.

“Offering a level of aromatic clarity and elegance that is not always easy for this grape, the G.D. Vajra 2022 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Viola delle Viole has beautiful aromas of earthy iris, gentle oak spice, toasted allspice and a very ripe or soft quality of fruit. It all balances out smoothly to the senses. The tannins are tucked softly within that texture to good effect, giving support but no harshness. This is a well-made Superiore with both intensity and balance.”
G.D. Vajra is one of Piedmont’s finest – a producer who has built up a reputation for making some of the very best, most reliable Barolo, Barbera and Barbaresco in Piedmont.
The Vajra story was born with Aldo Vaira – a rambunctious teenager who was sent to Barolo to be with his grandparents to try to calm him down. What it did was spark an insatiable appetite for wine growing and winemaking. The rest as they say is history.
They were the first estate in the region to earn organic certification and have been blazing the path for decades and decades in terms of sustainable farming. They were also the first to plant Riesling in Langhe – a craze that has taken over the region especially of late. Always the innovator, always delivering exceptional quality. That’s what you can expect with these wines. I’m not surprised by the Wine Spectator Top 10 nod.
