Gran Passaia Rosso Toscana 2020

Categories , ,

Italian wine laws are super strict and most have been around for centuries and centuries.Which varietals you can use, how long things must be aged in the barrel, how long in the bottle, etc. There’s very little room for imagination or even the innovation that’s driving much of the wine revolution elsewhere around the world.

But the SuperTuscan category continues to pump new life, enthusiasm and innovation in Tuscan winemaking that has even brought big outside players into the fold. Of course with new players and new demand comes higher prices. But for now, this remains one of the absolute finest bargains in all of Tuscany.

The 2020 is reminiscent of its 96-point predecessor, but sampled side-by-side, you get a little bit more up front aromatics with the new release as well as a touch more energy and freshness on the palate. That’s not surprising considering this is the newer vintage – but rest assured this one is every bit as silky and classy as the one that came before it.

Original price was: $25.00.Current price is: $21.00.

94 Points, Luca Maroni
This was made in the traditional winemaking practice of slow fermentation where the fresh drawn-off wine is combined with light drying of grapes, to give a softer and more modern taste. Full-bodied and harmonious with red ripe fruits and hints of vanilla. Sangiovese, Merlot.

94 Points, Luca Maroni

The Super Tuscan that took Nicholas Wines by storm is back in a new vintage. This one is a juicy, silky, seamless blend of mostly Sangiovese with a little Merlot. It’s made with a slow fermentation and light drying of grapes which I think all of that helps to make this a softer, more elegant style blend. It’s garnet in color with ripe red fruits, hints of vanilla oak and a touch of baking spice. The new vintage is once again highly scored with two ratings of 90+ from Luca Maroni and James Suckling.
