This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot.

“Menthol-infused dark berry flavours open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely crafted red and black berries and cherries. A wonderful savouriness and finely integrated tannins round off the package. The Saffredi 2022 is the result of the winery’s hard work, which has paid off. Elisabetta Geppetti’s son Ettore – who is only in his third vintage managing the winemaking without the experienced hand of former consultant Luca d’Attoma – has interpreted the vintage wonderfully. He tells me that, unusually, the team needed three harvests at different times to achieve the freshness that the wine displays. It’s an amazing wine. Wow!”

The wine is nuanced and multi-layered with fine details reminiscent of wild berries, spices, blue flowers and blood oranges. In my opinion, the 2022 stands out from almost all other Saffredi vintages. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all embrace with joy.”
