Le Pupille Saffredi Toscana 2022

99 Points, James Suckling – 98 Points, Decanter, 98 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

This is a huge scoring Super Tuscan that is on par with the very best wines made in this region, especially in the 2022 vintage.  Think ‘Aia’s, think Bibi Graetz. But in 2022 think beyond those wines because it outscored everybody – Sassicaia, Ornellaia, you name it! It’s an age-worthy wonder that magnificently starts to unfurl all kinds of aromas and hidden layers of black and red fruit that mingle with tea leaves, bramble and mouthwatering savory notes. This is a 40-50 year wine, easily – but already you can show why it’s so highly rated and so coveted amongst Tuscan collectors. It’s a total showstopper.

99 Points, James Suckling
This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot.

98 Points, Decanter
“Menthol-infused dark berry flavours open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely crafted red and black berries and cherries. A wonderful savouriness and finely integrated tannins round off the package. The Saffredi 2022 is the result of the winery’s hard work, which has paid off. Elisabetta Geppetti’s son Ettore – who is only in his third vintage managing the winemaking without the experienced hand of former consultant Luca d’Attoma – has interpreted the vintage wonderfully. He tells me that, unusually, the team needed three harvests at different times to achieve the freshness that the wine displays. It’s an amazing wine. Wow!”

98 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
“This is one of the few wines produced on the Tuscan coast that interprets the vintage in such an outstanding way. The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Saffredi skilfully plays with the elegance and fruity brilliance of the vintage, while exploiting its freshness and slightly leaner feel. The wine is nuanced and multi-layered with fine details reminiscent of wild berries, spices, blue flowers and blood oranges. In my opinion, the 2022 stands out from almost all other Saffredi vintages. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all embrace with joy.”

Fattoria Le Pupille is an elite Italian winery located in the Maremma region of Tuscany. Founded in the 1970s, the estate has become a symbol of quality and innovation in Italian winemaking.

Under the guidance of Elisabetta Geppetti, Le Pupille has spent the last few decades in a category at the top amongst the very best players. She inherited the winery in 1985 and, with a keen eye for potential, expanded the vineyards and elevated the quality of the wines. A pivotal moment came with the collaboration with the legendary winemaker Giacomo Tachis in the early 1980s, which significantly influenced the winery’s style.

Their international prowess is due in no small part due to its flagship wine, Saffredi, a Bordeaux-style blend that showcases the estate’s commitment to quality and experimentation. With the 2021 vintage, it appears they’ve unlocked some new heights that are particularly note-worthy, even for this fantastic estate.
