Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 242 Brut

Louis Roederer is one of the most recognizable names in all of wine, thanks to their Champagne. They’ve been making Champagne for hundreds of years, and they do it, as some would say, to perfection. Over 3.5 million bottles of Louis Roederer champagne are shipped each year to more than 100 countries. The brand behind ‘Cristal’ makes a whole heck of a lot more than just Cristal, but nearly every bottle they ever make is worth seeking out.

Today’s bottle is a must-have for anybody looking to pop bubbly in the next few months. It really is that good. I was sampled on it last week and it honestly left me taken aback. I never say there’s a better bottle than Diebolt for the price, but luckily for me, this one comes in $1 higher, so I don’t have to make the call!

Their Collection 242 Series started about a decade ago as a project to make the very best multi-vintage blend possible. Nobody is doing anything quite like this. There’s an entire dedicated team that oversees this project, visiting each grower three or more times a year and vinifying the wine parcel for parcel to maximize the flavor profile. It even has them taking all fruit picked and storing it in oak to allow each vintage to grow in sweetness, roundness, and substance before blending together different years without any rules or limits to make the best possible wine. Champagne needs more of this!

Original price was: $65.00.Current price is: $55.00.

Aromas of cooked apple, bread dough and lemon tart follow through to a full body with round, delicious fruit and a rich, flavorful finish. Yet, it remains tight and fine with lovely, compressed bubbles. New energy and freshness. Medium-to full-bodied with layers of fruit and vivid intensity. 42% chardonnay, 36% pinot noir and 22% pinot meunier. 8 grams dosage. Four years on the less. A new-format non-vintage that designates the year of the 242nd harvest, 2017, plus reserve wine of 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Drink or hold.

93+ Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Roederer’s Brut Premier was created in the 1980’s to prove to consumers that we could deliver consistent quality with a blend that compensated for less than perfectly ripe vintages,” explains Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon. “We were blending in pursuit of maturity, of ripeness. The concept behind the Brut Collection is the opposite: we’re looking for freshness—and we are embracing singularity, something we’re emphasizing by enumerating each year’s blend.” This project has been in the making since 2012, when Lecaillon set aside 21,000 liters of wine to constitute a perpetual reserve aged in large tanks without malolactic fermentation. Sourcing has evolved too: less must is coming from cooperatives, and only vineyards cultivated without the use of herbicides inform the blend. A dedicated team oversees all this, visiting every grower three times per year. And vinification is parcel by parcel to deliver a maximum of blending components.

Utilizing the 2017 vintage along with 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, and even 2009, the Collection 242 absolutely sings from the minute the cork is popped. It’s a fragrant and harmonious example that pieces together fresh layers of fruit, with a rich, creamy middle and a long, memorable finish.
