Michele Chiarlo Le Orme Barbera d’Asti 2021

92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Points, James Suckling – 90 Points, Wine Spectator

I taste dozens of Barberas every year, but of late, nothing has come close to the absurd value that you’re getting from Michele Chiarlo.

Their 2021 Barbera d’Asti Le Orme is a classic in the making. It’s a selection from four estate vineyards that share an absurdly long history dating back hundreds of years. La Court, La Serra, Montemareto, and Costa delle Monache are each remarkable vineyards in their own right, but when taken together and combined with a great vintage like the past two years, they produce a wine that is truly out of this world. Juicy, with red, blue and black fruits, a hint of sage, some bramble and a beautiful, high-toned finish.

Original price was: $22.00.Current price is: $17.00.

Aromas of juicy plums, macerated blackberries and intense purple flower notes dusted with savory spice pour from the glass. Fresh and fruit-forward, on the generous palate it gives tarter cherry notes with wild herbs finishing with subtle notes of roasted earth and anise.

91 Points, James Suckling
Quite an elegant nose, showing rich plum and berry fruit, together with notes of flowers and bark. Medium-bodied with a silky mouthfeel, but tight by the end, with a light bead of tannin poking through. Drink now.

90 Points, Wine Spectator
A racy version, with the vibrant acidity defining flavors of blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry and violet. Firm and balanced, this leaves a mouthwatering impression on the finish

I first discovered Michele Chiarlo many moons ago – not because of the wines but through shots of Grappa, often passed around after a long shift. This liquor made from whatever was left over after all the wine was made was used in part to pay the field workers who helped with the harvest.

Michele Chiarlo was founded back in 1956 by Michele and Giuseppina Chiarlo. The son of over seven generations of esteemed wine growers, Mr. Chiarlo is today one of the most respected producers of the fine wines of Piedmont and a leading figure in its viticultural industry.

At the production and vineyard level, where quality begins, Michele Chiarlo has for thirty years pursued an endless search for control over the finest vineyard sites in each of the zones from which he produces his wines. Their newly released ‘Le Orme’ Barbera that we are offering up, represents what will easily be one of the finer values in all of Piedmont this year.
