Mustiguillo Mestizaje Tinto 2021

92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Mustiguillo’s winemaking expertise shines through in every sip. The wine matures for one year in a combination of oak vats and barriques, resulting in a perfectly balanced expression of fruit, oak, and terroir. Their approach hasn’t gone unnoticed – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate came in with an impressive 92-point score, describing it as “quite classical, serious, balanced and fresh, with a certain complexity, Mediterranean with elegance.”

The 2021 Mestizaje Tinto strikes an impeccable balance – powerful enough to stand up to robust dishes, yet graceful enough for everyday enjoyment. It retains that vibrant fruit character that I  loved in the Atance Bobal but adds layers of spice and a refined structure that speaks to the addition of Syrah and Garnacha. That gives you a wine that is both deeply rooted in Spanish tradition and forward-thinking in its approach.

Mustiguillo makes some of those wines that you’ve never heard of but need in your cellar. Tell your friends at your own risk. Founded by Toni Sarrion in the late 1990s, this estate has quickly risen to prominence as one of Spain’s most exciting and forward-thinking producers. Located in the rugged, high-altitude terrain of El Terrerazo in Valencia, Mustiguillo has spearheaded the revival of the indigenous Bobal grape, transforming it from a workhorse variety into a source of world-class wines.

Bobal is actually the 2nd most grown red varietal in Spain after Tempranillo, but it is far less heralded on the international stage. Sarrion’s decision to focus on Bobal was considered risky at the time, but his vision has paid off spectacularly. The estate’s flagship wine, Finca Terrerazo, became the first single-estate wine in the Mediterranean to earn the coveted Vino de Pago status in 2010, Spain’s highest classification for wine. This recognition not only elevated Mustiguillo’s status but also put Bobal on the map as a grape capable of producing wines of exceptional character and complexity.

This is a step up from the Atance that we brought to you a few weeks ago that instantly became a fan-favorite. It has the same fresh Bobal essence, but with much more complexity and depth due to the addition of Syrah and Grenache to the cuvee. This is elegant yet light on its feet and with great natural acidity and harmony. A straight up steal at under $20/bottle.
