Occidental Pinot Noir Bodega Ridge Vineyard 2022

97 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 97 Points, Vinous – 96 Points, Wine Spectator

“The 2022 Pinot Noir Bodega Ridge Vineyard has layered aromas of cranberry sauce, Earl Grey tea leaves, bitters and foresty undertones, and it becomes more floral as it airs in the glass. The palate derives power from its sheer concentration of pure, expressive, spicy fruit. It’s structured by powdery tannins, and its tremendously juicy, mouthwatering acidity lures you back again and again for another sip.”

97 Points, Vinous

“The 2022 Pinot Noir Bodega Ridge Vineyard is a powerful, deep wine. A blast of dark red/purplish fruit, wildflowers, gravel, orange peel, mint, sage and tobacco all open with some reluctance. This is the most virile, somber of the wines in this range. The taut, vibrant finish is salivating, but there is plenty of breadth on the back end waiting to emerge.”

96 Points, Wine Spectator

“This gorgeous wine offers a core of sappy kirsch, cherry and mulberry fruit that manages to stay light on its feet even as waves of black tea, iris, blood orange, applewood and incense notes emerge steadily through the mouthwatering finish. Youthfully packed, with coiled energy giving the tension this needs for the longer haul. Best from 2025 through 2038. From California

Occidental is Steve Kistler’s beloved Pinot Noir project that he’s always dreamed about starting. It’s a place with a singular focus – to make world-class pinot noir from unique sites on the coastal headlands in the Freestone-Occidental area of the Sonoma Coast. Like the wines of Flowers and Paul Hobbs, this is the West Sonoma Coast on full display and representing some of the greatest bottlings in the world.

Last year, his Freestone bottling was Wine Spectator’s #2 Wine of the Year last year(!) in their annual Top 100 and also received a 98-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.  Steve Kistler, the magician puts his magical touch with this Occidental wines – giving so much expression and pure beauty to these wines. They’re elegant and structured and about the finest examples of American Pinot Noir that we have.
