Opus One 2021

100 Points, Jane Anson/Decanter – 99 Points, James Suckling – 99 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

*After our smashing success with Opus last year, they rewarded us handsomely with a small allocation of their perfect 100-point 2021 bottling. I don’t expect these to last long and I don’t have very many. Apologies in advance to anyone who is shut out. Just read Decanter’s star Bordeaux writer had to say about this iconic, all-time bottling:

“A classical vintage that perfectly suits the Opus style. Gorgeous vivid plum colour, sculpted, balanced, with a ton of lift, waves of rose petals, iris and peony, soft grilled cumin, sage and white pepper spice. Love the hidden power here and the supple slightly chalky tannins that are structured in their architecture with a precision and carved quality. Precise, layered and stretched out, a brilliant Opus, concentrated and yet delicate. Feels pared back and captures the spirit of early Opus, when it moved forward the conversation of what Napa could be. Michael Silacci director, 100% new oak for ageing extremely well integrated even now.”

Original price was: $495.00.Current price is: $440.00.

“An enticing aroma of violets, cherry blossoms, fresh blue and black fruit and great structure define this beautiful, age-worthy wine. Subtle layering of fruit and oak spices between firm, fine-grained and supportive tannins gives it a calm intensity. So elegant and polished. Hints of cinnamon and graphite accent blackcurrant and blueberry flavors that linger and grow in a long finish. Already attractive to drink, but best after 2029.”

The 2021 Opus One is another riveting wine from this estate. Pure cassis, graphite, chocolate, and nicely integrated oak, as well as an undeniable sense of minerality, all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building tannins, wonderful purity and precision, and a great finish. This is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet in the making, and it’s going to evolve for 20-25 years if well stored.

To wine novices and experts alike, few names if any ring out or carry the weight that the name Opus One creates. It’s one of the most elegant, sought-after collectors items that are on the market any given vintage.

Opus One is a partnership founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, France, and renowned Napa Valley vintner, Robert Mondavi – two absolute titans in the industry. Their facial profiles appear on the front label of the wines, making for an iconic and highly recognizable bottle. The two make luxury bottlings from their Napa Valley vineyards with the first vintage coming in 1979. Ever since that vintage, it seems like the demand has always far outweighed the supply.

The estate vineyards of Opus One are comprised of four parcels that sit on the western side of the world-famous Oakville AVA in Napa Valley. Two parcels, totaling 100 acres, are within the renowned To Kalon Vineyard which is the greatest Cabernet vineyard in the world. The vineyard sites plus the piles of money in resources plus the Mouton/Mondavi connection puts Opus One in a category of their own.
