Opus One Overture 2021

Opus One due to the massive demand for the iconic wine has ballooned in prices by hundreds of dollars. For that reason alone, I have no problem suggested the lights out second wine from this epic winery – the Operture. Overture is usually a multi-vintage cuvée, but the 2021 vintage was so flawless at Opus, the team opted to bottle this as vintage specific for the first time in this wine’s long illustrious career.

A seamlessly drawn together, elegant cuvee, this one pulls you in from the second you pop the cork. Lovely dark earth tinged fruit aromas lead off on the nose – complex and layered with hints of espresso, mocha, and cocoa powder, warm fruits through to the long finish with supple, round tannins. Wow! A show-stopper at any table and a perfect bottle for a special occasion.

Opus One is one of the most iconic American wines of all time. But if you haven’t noticed, the price of it has absolutely skyrocketed over the past decade or so. I remember thinking no one was going to buy Opus One for $200/bottle – now it goes for anywhere around $450-650/bottle. It’s bananas.

While there’s hardly a time that I’d recommend the Opus One, I have no problem suggesting the lights-out second wine from this epic winery – the Operture. And as if this could get any better, this is the first time in the 30+ years of this wine being made that the team felt like a vintage was so good, that it had to be bottled by itself. I present to you the 2021 Overture.
