Piaggia Carmignano Riserva 2020

96 Points, Vinous (#75 Wine of the Year, Vinous 2024) 94 Points, Wine Spectator

“The 2020 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia impresses with its understated power, lifting up with a delicate blend of dried roses and black cherries, complicated by cedary spice and hints of dark chocolate. This is pure elegance on the palate, seamlessly silky and soothing with depths of polished red and blue fruits that swirl, all energized by vibrant acidity. A web of fine tannins wraps the senses in youthful poise as the 2020 finishes impossibly long and staining, leaving notes of white pepper, licorice and violet inner florals to resonate. This is a dark and radiant beauty. The 2020 is a showstopper.”

“If there is one estate that embodies the potential of Carmignano, Piaggia just might be it.”Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“This has mellowed nicely, with black currant, black cherry, violet, vanilla, cedar and earth flavors. Shows finesse and intensity, along with excellent balance and a lingering aftertaste that echoes the fruit and oak spice, picking up a hint of wild herbs too. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2040.”

Piaggia is a renowned winery located in the Carmignano region of Tuscany. They are a critical darling none for making wines with exceptional complexity, balance and aging potential. It’s not an exaggeration to say they are the very best in Carmignano… at least that’s what both Antonio Galloni and Parker’s Wine Advocate have said about this incredible estate.

Piaggia’s flagship wine, the Carmignano Riserva is a gorgeous blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and 10% Merlot. Grown on medium-textured clay and galestro soils at 250 meters elevation with southwest exposure, the grapes are vinified separately in small vats with indigenous yeasts giving them a ton of personality as well as intricate layers that mesh together in harmony.

There is no fining or filtering here – what you see is what you get. In 2020, the result is arguably this winery’s greatest to date. Antonio Galloni is probably still gushing about it to his friends. An instant classic.
