Ramey Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard 2017

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

Dave Ramey’s Rodgers Creek Vineyard Syrah comes from the heart of the Petaluma Gap, where wind and fog reign supreme. The vines struggle in chalky volcanic ash soils on steep hillsides, creating fruit with incredible concentration. With pure western exposure and the Pacific’s cooling influence channeled through the Gap, it’s a perfect storm for something truly special.

This is Ramey’s love letter to the Northern Rhône, complete with the classical 12% Viognier co-fermentation that adds layers of complexity and intrigue. It’s an intellectual’s wine that doesn’t sacrifice pure pleasure for contemplation.

96 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2017 Syrah Rodger’s Creek Vineyard, co-fermented with 12% Viognier, has very pretty aromas of blackcurrant streaked with menthol, violet, bitter chocolate and coffee nuances. The full-bodied palate has a concentrated core of mint-laced fruit supported by powdery tannins and bright acidity, and it has a long, nuanced finish. It has the potential to mature gracefully over the next decade.”

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

“A deep red/purple, the 2017 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard includes the classic addition of 12% Viognier and is fresh and spicy with notes of wild lavender, smoked peppercorn, and blackberry coulis. Full-bodied, with good lift, it reveals crunchy plum fruit, ripe tannins, and a gravelly texture. This fantastic red from this hot vintage demonstrates both what these cool sites and what Syrah are capable of. Drink it over the next 10 or so years.”

This is one of those wines that I loved and I had to share even if I’m not sure it really fits into any special retail category. This is a special ode to the Northern Rhone from David Ramey – one of America’s greatest winemaking heroes who is fresh off yet another trip to Wine Spectator’s Top 10.

Ramey’s journey began at UC Davis and continued with experiences in France, notably at Château Pétrus. He later led winemaking at prestigious California wineries like Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus Estate, and Rudd Estate. At his namesake vineayrd, he’s able to lean on his decades of experience making some of the world’s best wine and focus all of his efforts on his own wines – creating magical bottlings year after year.
