Schloss Gobelsburg is an institution in Austria. No place in the entire country has the history that this amazing place can boast. It was founded back in 1074 as a Zwettl Monastery, and 1171 was the year they were granted their first vineyards, the oldest recorded sites in Kamptal. The estate and Castle Gobelsburg were controlled by as many as 19(!) different families between 1074 and 1740, and in 1786 absorbed the famous Kammern Winery and vineyards.
Two hundred year plus later Eva and Michael Moosbrugger were given the winemaking and vinicultural contract for this estate back in the mid 1990s and with the help and guidance of Michael’s mentor Willi Bründlmayer, the winery regained its prestige and then took it up a few notches to heights never seen before.
In 2006 Michael Moosbrugger was awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year’ by the well-respected Austrian wine magazine Falstaff, the highest award given to an Austrian winemaker, and in 2009, 2010, and again in 2019 the estate was acknowledged as a ‘Top 100 Winery in the World’ by Wine & Spirits Magazine. Today, the Schloss Gobelsburg wines can be seen all over Michelin-Starred restaurant wine lists, including at Eleven Madison Park.
