Jean Claude Janin formerly managed the Cave Co-op at Viré-Clessé but gave up his cushy position when he met a local girl, Marie-Odile, to farm the 4HA that belonged to her family. Over the next 20 years, the Janins have expanded their estate to 9HA but the jewel of the estate is the steep parcel of old vines next to the church in the sleepy village of Quintaine, first planted by the monks of Cluny, over 1000 years ago!
Like many of the great domaines of the Cote d’Or, the Janins concentrate on selling direct to private clients and Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe, their export list of clients is tiny and curated, we’re lucky to be on the list.
His brilliant Terroir de Quintaine, comes from a single parcel on a steep hillside of 75-year-old vines, laden with marine fossils and rarely makes it stateside. The entire production for their top wine is less than 400 cases annually. Small-production, big results!
