93 Points, Wine Enthusiast

Tommasi’s 2021 Rafaèl Valpolicella comes from the estate’s oldest vineyards and is absolutely singing right now. This has to be one of the better under $20 bottles I’ve had from the Veneto in over a decade. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 93 points, praising its “purity of fruit and savoriness” with “tart and vibrant cherries mixed with wild raspberries” alongside “floral and savory herbal aromatics.” Wine Spectator chimed in with 90 more, noting its “savory base note of fresh loamy earth” and “juicy plumped black cherry, red licorice, violet and dark chocolate.” This is one of those bottles that would absolutely shine at a Thanksgiving table.

93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Rafaèl is from the Tommasi estate’s oldest vineyards and has been produced in the same style since the beginning. It shows the beauty of the region in its purity of fruit and savoriness. Tart and vibrant cherries mixed with wild raspberries are on equal footing with the floral and savory herbal aromatics that swirl in the glass. The palate is elegant with depth showing sour plum, dried tobacco leaf, turned earth and violet. This complex wine drinks well now and will continue to develop.

90 Points, Wine Spectator
This expressive red partners a savory base note of fresh loamy earth and an overtone of balsamic herbs and spices with a sweeter profile of juicy plumped black cherry, red licorice, violet and dark chocolate. Fresh and harmonious, with lightly chewy tannins firming the finish.

The Tomassi family is a big time in the Italian wine industry especially in the Veneto. They’ve been at this for four generations now, with a rich history that dates all the way back to 1902. The family has slowly grown their holdings as their reputation grew without the 20th century and now own a whopping 800 hectares of land in some of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions, including Valpolicella, Soave, and Sicily.

The gem of their portfolio is the Rafael Valpolicella Classico Superiore. It’s named after the first vineyard the family purchased in the Valpolicella Classica zone and represents the oldest vines the family has. This wine is known for its elegance, balance, and expressive fruit flavors. It’s always a critic darling and in the 2021 vintage, that was no different, earning a whopping 93-point review from Wine Enthusiast. These guys continue to establish themselves amongst the best in the region with each vintage.
