Vinos de la Luz ‘Relatos del Callejón’ Malbec 2020

97 Points, Decanter

The microclimate here is perfect. Cool, breezy mountain mornings with ample sunlight and cool nights with big temperature changes. The grapes take their time to ripen, but when they do they’re packed with intense flavors.

Decanter called the wine “intensely perfumed” with a “vibrant palate” in their rave 97-point review, the highest rating given to any under $30 Malbec in the 2020 vintage. But thanks to some wheeling and dealing, we’re not just under $30/btl, we’re far lower.

Original price was: $24.00.Current price is: $19.00.

Intensely perfumed, with a pretty nose of lifted violet, delicate raspberry and plush black cherry, while the vibrant palate is graced with cedar, thyme, lush plum, a refined mineral tension and ends on a perfumed, long finish. Very good!

But this is a Nicholas Wines first. And sometimes tells me, a potential new staple for us as well. This is old-vine Malbec from the oldest vineyards in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. That’s as far back as this country goes with wine.

Pablo Navarrete runs the show at Vinos de la Luz and will be the first one to tell you that the amazing vineyards anywhere from 3300-3500 above sea level from which the ‘Relatos del Callejon’ Malbec is made are the real stars of the show and allows him to use a very minimalist approach to his operation.

The microclimate here is perfect. Cool, breezy mountain mornings with ample sunlight and cool nights with big temperature changes. The grapes take their time to ripen, but when they do they’re packed with intense flavors. If you haven’t had anything from Vinos de la Luz yet, it’s time to change that ASAP.
